I believe that part of a trader’s journey is deciding what kind of trader you are. This can be a mysterious and frustrating phrase for new traders as you don’t know enough to even begin to answer that question.
“I want to be a trader that makes money” is probably the first, most unoriginal answer that comes to mind.
But to dive deeper, we find that there are nearly infinite kinds of traders who can be categorized anywhere from the duration of trades, the products traded, the mechanisms of the trade, if you are a buyer/seller of the trade, or what time frame you trade on.
Some traders only live on and execute from one time frame. Some like to look at two. Others, like me, like to look at the whole spectrum. To hone that in a little, what I mean is that I like to see the whole story of where price is and has been. This means that when I evaluate a ticker’s chart, I look at a very high time frame such as the monthly all the way down to a very small time frame like the 2 minute.
Some may find this overwhelming or even unnecessary. “To each their own” would be my reply and for me, seeing all the time frames when evaluating a chart for a trade allows me to see the entire picture and all the layers.
LAYERING THE CHARTS
‘Layers’ is probably the most accurate description of the concept behind my use of multiple time frames. In the beginning of my exploration of the trading world, I had a lot of observations I needed to make in order to figure out how and why price would move. Months of observations lead me to discover that there were what appeared to be invisible forces acting on the movement of price.
Yes of course there was the concept of support and resistance due to price areas, but this wasn’t what I was seeing or experiencing. Perhaps I would be watching a ticker move very smoothly along, say, the hourly 50 SMA only to stop in midair and suddenly reverse course. I would look for some price level resistance areas but none really lined up. And the hourly chart didn’t have any moving averages overhead that price was running into.
So what was it that could stop price in its tracks that I wasn’t seeing? I began exploring and this is when I started to put together the idea of ‘Time Frame Layers’ and price existing in a multidimensional space; each dimension being a different time frame. If you only trade with one or maybe two time frames, you won’t see all the forces acting on your ticker. These time frame dimensions, or layers, are only visible when you view all of them at once and thus, you have Multiple Time Frame Magic.
In this series we call Multiple Time Frame Magic, I will show you countless examples of how the forces of moving averages and price areas on various time frames can affect your trade in ways that had you scratching your head; Wondering why a great looking move suddenly reversed course or just stopped working. More often than not, the explanation came from an obvious answer, but on a time dimension, you couldn’t see.
Come with me on this fascinating journey that will open your eyes and your understanding of the way stocks actually move in a multidimensional space. With this series you will see exactly how I view the world of price movements across time and you too, will begin to see how to take advantage of Multiple Time Frame Magic.
